Tenants Helping Tenants

On PEI we have regulated rent increases, (i.e. if the rent was $850 in 2017 it can only be at most $903). Unless the landlord filed for and was granted special permission to increase the rent any increase over $903 is illegal and should be refunded.

The problem with the regulations is that there was no way to find out what the previous tenant was paying because there was no Rental Registry. We’ve changed that! We’re asking all tenants to register the rent at their current address and their last address in the new PEI Rental Registry. This information will help tenants find illegal rent increases and get their money back. If you’ve moved since 2015, please send a My Old Apartment card to your old apartment. The information needed to fight illegal rent increases is the date and amount of rent. If the new tenant discovers they’re paying too much, they can get the excess back and have their rent lowered.

If you want to help fight illegal rent increases, fill in the registry and send a card.
