File A Rent Dispute

The allowable rent increase was 2.3% in 2025 and 2% in 2026.
If you are unsure whether your rent was increased legally, here’s what you can do:

  1. Get “Form 2A – Tenant Application to Determine Dispute” from the PEI Rental Office
  2. Complete the Form 2A
  3. Choose (b) To request a return of rent due to an unlawful rent increase. In the Particulars of dispute, include the amount of rent to be returned. (Excess $ x Months = Total Excess)
  4. Fill in your contact information
  5. Fill in your landlord’s contact information
  6. Submit the application to the Rental Office. You can send by email (askrental@peirentaloffice.ca), registered mail, or delivered in-person.
  7. Serve a copy to your landlord. This can be done by email, registered mail, or delivered in-person. If you are mailing or delivering in person, make sure you get proof that it was served.
